Do I need to audition to join the Primrose Hill Choir?

No. The Primrose Hill Choir has no auditions and welcomes adults of all ages and abilities.

Can beginners join the choir?

Yes. Complete beginners and people returning to singing are very welcome. The musical director teaches the songs during rehearsals, helps improve singing technique and explains the basics of reading music.

What kind of music does the choir sing?

The choir performs a wide variety of music including pop, rock, classical, gospel, musical theatre, world music and Christmas carols.

When and where does the choir rehearse?

The choir rehearses on Monday evenings during term time from 7.30pm to 9.30pm at the Primrose Hill Community Centre, with bank holiday rehearsals held at St Mary's Church, Primrose Hill.

Can I come to a trial rehearsal?

Yes. New members are welcome to join at any time during the year, although you should contact Matthew before attending your first rehearsal.

Are there opportunities to perform?

Yes. The choir performs regularly at concerts and special events across London, including venues such as the Victoria & Albert Museum, Trafalgar Square, the South Bank Centre and Wembley Stadium.

Are there solo opportunities?

Yes. More experienced singers have regular opportunities to perform solos during concerts.

What is the choir community like?

The choir has around thirty friendly singers of all ages and abilities. Members enjoy a welcoming atmosphere, regular social events and visits to a local pub after rehearsals.

How much does it cost to join?

You can pay weekly or for the remainder of the term at a discounted rate. Student and low-waged concessions are available.

Join one of London's most sociable choirs. New members are welcome at any time, but contact Matthew before attending. There are no auditions.

Day, time & venue

The Primrose Hill Choir meets on Mondays during term-time (see What’s On for dates), 7.30-9.30pm, upstairs at the Primrose Hill Community Centre, 29 Hopkinsons Place, London, NW1 8TN. Map here. Directions: go up Fitzroy Road towards Primrose Hill and the community centre is through a gate on the right-hand side about 100m before the park. The nearest tubes are Chalk Farm (10 minutes) or Swiss Cottage (20 minutes).

Bank holiday Mondays: Rehearsals are at St Mary’s Church, NW3 3DJ.

Payment

Drop-in: £12, £10 students and low-waged. Cash or card.

⭐Pay for the term (save £4 per rehearsal): £8 per remaining week of term, £6 students and low-waged. Cash or card (+£1 fee) at the door, or by bank transfer in advance (contact us, no extra charge). The latest you can switch to paying termly is three rehearsals before the end of term.

Singing with the choir

Singing with us is a fun and healthy way to spend an evening and gives you something to look forward to at the start of the week! We have about 30 singers, of all ages and abilities, and no auditions. The conductor will teach you the songs, help you improve your singing technique and explain the basics of reading music. You can get to know people better during the break in rehearsals and afterwards in the pub. For more advanced singers there are solo opportunities. There have been many lasting friendships formed in the choir. "A choir that continues to improve…a coming together of a really nice bunch of people" (Sylvia).

The music

We sing all styles of music: classical, rock, pop, gospel, musical theatre, world music and Christmas carols (see Hear Us in the menu). For example, Pastime With Good Company, Amazing Grace, O Fortuna from Carmina Burana and Siyahamba; Carol of the Bells, The Night Is Still by Cecilia McDowall and Last Christmas by George Michael; West Side Story, The Theme from James Bond and Singing in the Rain; medleys from Guys & Dolls and Les Mis. Concerts have included Music from the Movies, Music from the Americas, Carmen and Sing Africa. We post rehearsal tracks at www.soundcloud.com (click here) to help you learn the songs.

Choir history

The choir was formed by Matthew Watts in 2012 (see Press), and has always been in demand. During the first year alone we sang in ten different venues in Primrose Hill! Performances since then have included the Camden Town Hall, Roundhouse, Trafalgar Square, South Bank Centre, ARD German Radio, BBC Radio London and Wembley Stadium, twice (reel here, Adiemus here). In 2025 we sang in a video for Ryder Cup Europe that was viewed hundreds of thousands of times. Musicians the choir has performed with include the virtuoso violin soloist Tamás Fejes and the singers Kai Hoffman from Ronnie Scott’s jazz club and Ngawang Lodup from Tibet (O2 Centre, Womad, BBC radio).

Social events & social media

New people are always warmly welcomed, and many lasting friendships have been formed. After rehearsals and performances we like to support our excellent local pubs, and at Christmas we enjoy a tasty three-course dinner. Other events have included picnics on Primrose Hill, pub sing-a-longs and barbecues.
